Born into this world either a male or female, that is what the doctor placed on your birth certificate, after checking and examining your anatomy you were either male or female, there are no in between, or is there one exception to the rule, to both of these gender questions. Once in a while you have someone, born with both the ovaries (gonads) of a female and testicles (gonads) of a male, because somewhere into the nine months of gestation that change did not quite happen as planned. If both of the organs are developing at the same time, then you were born a hermaphrodite having both reproductive organs and other characteristics of both male and female sexes.

Born as a hermaphrodite, you are probably more than likely, would have conflicts within their mental, physiological emotional, psychological, sociological make up because, they have both reproductive organs and hormones. They would probably have a hard time adjusting, because they are being pulled in two different directions of having both male and female organs. Emotionally this would create psychological nightmare, for these individuals within themselves.

Here I going to provide you with information about conception and development as to how we are developed. Then you can make the decision as to if being transgendered is biological or psychological in nature.

The reproductive process to determine, whether you will be born a male or female is around the 7th week of gestation
as follows;

"Differentiation of the testes begins around the 7th week of gestation when the somatic cells form sex cords (the future Sertoli cells) that incorporate the primitive germ cells. At this stage, the human fetus has both M�llerian (paramesonephric) and Wolffian (mesonephric) ducts that are the respective anlagen of the female and male reproductive tracts (Box 6.3). Sertoli cells begin to secrete AMH, a dimeric glycoprotein (molecular weight 70 000) that causes involution of the M�llerian ducts.

By the 8th fetal week, Leydig cells appear in the differentiating testis and begin to secrete androgens,the actions of which are essential to the masculinization of the fetus. With the regression of the M�llerian ducts and under the influence of testosterone, the Wolffian ducts develop into the epididymis, the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles.

In the absence of AMH, the M�llerian ducts develop to form the Fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and upper part of the vagina (Box 6.3). This differentiation begins around the 10th week of gestation and the Wolffian ducts begin to degenerate"

Like the gonads, but unlike the internal reproductive tracts, the structures that develop into the external genitalia are initially identical in males and females.

The genital tubercle elongates and forms the shaft and glans of the penis. The urogenital sinus becomes continuous with a groove that develops on the caudal face of the genital tubercle and this groove closes to become the penile part of the urethra while the fused urogenital folds enclosing the sinus becomes the prostate part of the urethra. In the most distal part of the penis, invagination of a cord of epithelial cells covering the glans meets the penile urethra and when this cord canalizes the formation of the urethra is complete. The line of fusion along the urethra and scrotum is called the raph�. The labioscrotal folds form the scrotum.

In females, the genital tubercle bends inferiorly to form the clitoris, the urogenital folds, that do not fuse, form the labia minora and the genital swellings develop into the labia majora. The vagina and the urethra open into the vestibule of the urogenital sinus."

"The gonads are additional types of endocrine glands. They are the sex organs and include the male testes and female ovaries. Their main role is the production of steroid hormones. The testes produce androgens, which allow for the development of secondary sex characteristics and the production of sperm cells. Testosterone, the most prominent androgen in males, stimulates the development and functioning of the primary sex organs . It also stimulates the development and maintenance of secondary male characteristics, such as hair growth on the face and the deep pitch of the voice.

Estrogen and progesterone are responsible for the development of the breast and for the uterine cycle. Progesterone is a female hormone secreted by the corpus luteum after ovulation during the second half of the menstrual cycle. It prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation of a fertilized egg and allows for complete shedding of the endometrium at the time of menstruation. In the event of pregnancy, the progesterone level remains stable beginning a week or so after conception.

The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone, which are hormones responsible for the development of sexual characteristics in females and the preparation of female bodies for pregnancy and childbirth."

Transgender has created a wild stir, with the former Olympian Gold Medal Triathlon winner Bruce Jenner coming out and stating that he has transgender tendencies and feels more like a women, than a man. Mr. Jenner, also stated for all purposes he is a woman.

In our society there has always been a debate regarding transgender individuals, that is their condition biological or psychological in nature.

There is a belief that if you place a young child in a environment that is different from their physical anatomy, children will identify with that environment and act accordingly.

Example: If a boy or girl plays with the opposite sex, for any periods of time, that individual will begin to behave or have tendencies towards that particular gender. So the questions becomes is it biological or psychological or sociological that people are having these issues of relating to transgender.
